PMC celebrates its 20th anniversary with launch of new twenty speaker range

To celebrate PMC’s 20th anniversary what could be more appropriate than a bash at London’s British Music Experience?.

Live music came from The Tin Sprits, featuring XTC guitarist, Dave Gregory with appearances by Marillion vocalist, Steve 'H' Hogarth and guitarist, Steve Rothery.

Radio presenter, Richard Allinson hosted the celebrations running through the company's history, and PMC’s contribution to the professional market. This included tributes from many well-known producers and mastering engineers.

To mark this milestone in PMC’s history it has launched a new range of loudspeakers, the 20 series.

Product manager, Keith Tonge explained that the company started with a clean sheet of paper when it set out to design the new range. In fact the only things carried over from other PMC designs where the fixing bolts for the drive units!

The cabinets are a radical departure from the traditional PMC designs with being canted back by five degrees. This negates the need for electronic compensation to time align the drive units, so reducing the complexity and number of components in the crossover.

The attention to detail is amazing with every aspect of the design being scrutinized. Even the gold-plated terminals are custom made, with the biwire link pins manufactured from the same material for consistency.

PMC co-founder and designer, Peter Thomas explained about the advances the company had made in the transmission line design and the resulting increase in ‘musicality’ that had been achieved.

A new, 27mm, soft dome, Sonolex tweeter is used in all the models, with a crossover point of  1.8kHz, with a 24 dB per octave roll-off. The mid/bass units are either 14cm in the twenty.21 and twenty.23, or 17cm in the larger twenty.22 standmounter and the range-topping twenty.24 floor stander.

Rare-earth magnets are used to create invisible fixings for the grilles. The plinths on the floor-standing speakers are decoupled from the cabinets using a special cork/rubber compound. This is also used to decouple the top and bottom plates on the optional custom made stands available for the stand-mount models. To match the speaker cabinets cosmetically these also have the same five degree slant to the main tubes.

In keeping with the ‘20’ theme the range comes complete with a 20 year guarantee.
